A Denver Police Officer holds a pistol dropped off at a gun turn-in program in the New Covenant Church on Denver’s east side. The program was originally intended as a buy-back before the sponsoring organization ran out of money to exchange for guns. Targeted at firearms that have a fair likelihood of being used in the commission of a crime –stolen and street-purchased guns –sponsors collected a dozen weapons in a matter of hours on a no-questions-asked basis before turning them over to the police.

Lately I’ve been using my flash like something of a deep-sea flashlight, bringing the sea creatures out of the darkness with a pretty straight-forward blast of light. Here’s a few frames exploring the strange underwater flora of Christmas at my parents’ house.

Had a pleasant surprise of coming home a few days ago to find that TIME has included one of the pictures shot for an assignment over the summer in their 2008 Pictures of the Year here on their website. The photograph comes from an article on the changing role of NORAD –the highly armored underground facility responsible, in part, for tracking worldwide missile launches. TIME also produced an online essay here and I blogged a little bit about it here. The mountain-bunker is pictured above along with the city lights of Colorado Springs in the rearview mirror of my pleasantly aging pickup. She turns ten next month, in case anyone wanted to send her a quart of oil or a passenger-side CV boot (part number CVUN2372).

Cindy Stremel of Herman Dinges and His Polka Band falls to the floor of Dinges’ garage, adding a little rock star to her Christmas accordion. Dinges, a neighbor who I’d never met until I wandered into his backyard a couple days ago, has been putting on Denver’s most extravagant Christmas lights show for 40 years. The lights –complete with giant bloc letters that read “HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS” –were what originally drew me to the house. The Polka is what brought out the camera. Just happened to pass through when Stremel opened the rehearsal space to play a little music for some of the dozens of visitors that stop by each hour.
Made. My. Day.

Old pictures for a perpetually recycling story. Will be returning to New York City for Luceo’s second annual meeting from the 7th-14th of January. Editor rounds and my favorite, layered city streets followed by a jaunt down to Washington, DC. to cover the Presidential Inauguration. Last night it dropped to -20 here in Colorado; I’m counting on New York to crank the heat up a little bit so this can feel like my tropical vacation in the dead of winter.

Bobby Tan at Denver music-art-studio-warehouse-venue-thing, Rhinoceropolis. Lots of smack-center composition lately. What can I say, I’m embracing a clean aesthetic for the moment.

Found this in front of a dentist’s office yesterday. Neat, orderly, perfectly spaced, clean. Just like your teeth after you leave his office.
Seriously, is it me, or are dentists really just licensed sociopaths?
